~Isabella Samuel & the MRSA staph "super bug" infection~

Isabella and her rheumatologist Doctor Mary Toth

We're so lucky too have these precious children in good health again! You see both Samuel 7 and Isabella 11 had the MRSA "super bug" staph infection just 2 months ago. At the time we did not know that it was MRSA. Not until Isabella ended up in the hospital did we find out. I remember one of the nurses at the hospital telling us to read the article in Readers Digest about what Isabella had, but not until Isabella went home. Samuel got MRSA from attending a football camp..then Isabella got it from Samuel. Isabella ended up in the hospital see my past posts. She had to have emergency surgery on her leg. Isabella who suffers from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis went to her rheumatologist this past Fri. for her regular check up. Doctor Toth told Isabella's Mother (my daughter) how very lucky Isabella (& Samuel) are to have recovered from the MRSA infection. I'm sure many of you have heard on the News about the children who have recently died from this drug resistant staph infection. How awful...Samuel did not have the problems Isabella did. Isabella is immune suppressed because of some of the 6 medications she takes like Enbrel and Methotrexate for her JRA. All this started from a tiny piece of artificial turf stuck in Sam's leg. We through it was just a splinter at the time. Isabella's infection got in via a skinned knee. It's amazing how something as simple as a skinned knee can be so life threatening... I'm so glad Isabella & Samuel's Mother is always on top of whatever goes on with them. Thank you God for healing my precious grandchildren!

I am so glad that they are on the mend! I do not think there is enough education about this infection, sheer panic but not education.Have a good weekend!

Dear Bella,
GOOD NEWS!! So happy that Isa and Sam are healthy. It is difficult when adults become ill, but when it is a child, well...I simply can't put it into words. Tell them both to get lots of treats on Halloween and be sure to share their fun with us:)

Mary, as I said before, this is not a fun infection and it almost killed me, so I am very careful about cuts and scrapes. The most important thing I found is to wash, wash, wash, those hands that touch nasty stuff and I NEVER put my purse on a bathroom floor, grab paper before I wash my hands, and push the door with my back when possible in public bathrooms. I am so glad that they are doing well, because it is so scary and Vancomycin is the last resort antibiodic, so I am hoping they come up with something to fight this dreaded staph. They are so adorable in their costumes. I can't wait to see mine this weekend. Hugs, Pat

Hi Mary,
I miss visiting with you ~ hope your are doing well :)
It's looks like the kids had a fun fun Halloween!!
& I'm glad Isa & Sam are both doing well :):) So so scary this MRSA ... daily I hear in the news now.... very frightening!!
Recently, I see 2 schools in nearby areas that have closed for the day because of a student infected with this "super bug"
Can't stress enough to my little ones to wash their hands and the older ones to stop sharing their slurpees or anything else with each other!! I don't want to be a freak or anything but it worries me how cavilier they all can be sometimes!! Me...I seem to be going through more gallons of bleach here at home...
Your blog is still so beautiful & I will stop by again soon!!
Hugs, Dionne
